Judge William M. "Bill" Calvert '44
William "Bill" Calvert left Colorado College in 1943 with a
commission in the Navy and a duty to defend his country in World War II.
A year later, while stationed in the Pacific, he completed his degree.
When he returned home, he joined his fellow veterans in making a commitment
to build a better world. Bill achieved this by creating a better community
for us all. As a district judge, then chief judge for the 4th Judicial
District in Colorado Springs, Bill gained the respect and admiration of
all who knew him.
During the time he spent serving on the bench, he contributed to his community
in many different ways. All who live in Colorado Springs can thank Bill
for his service to St. Francis Hospital, the girls Club, Brockhurst Boys'
Ranch, and the Pikes Peak counseling and Mental Health Center. After his
retirement, he continued to remain just as active, assisting organizations
such as the Colorado Springs Nursery Center and the soup kitchen.
Colorado College, its students and his fellow alumni have also benefited
from Bill's involvement. Bill and his wife Madalyn were among the first
to sign up to host a first year students as part of the "Adopt-a-Student"
Program. Year after year, they continue to welcome new students to the
community and orient them to the college and Colorado Springs. Understanding
the need for financial aid, an outstanding faculty and facility, Bill
volunteered to be a class agent, encouraging fellow classmates to support
the College. He also became a board member for the Colorado Springs Alumni
Metro group, serving as its co-chair. Bill's experience led to his appointment
to a National Alumni Council leadership task force charged with finding
ways to enhance metro activities around the country. His fellow Colorado
Springs metro board members elected Bill to represent them on the National
Alumni Council. He was elected to another term by the council, serving
an additional four years, providing wisdom and knowledge of an important
generation of CC alumni.
Then came another important election. When alumni reach the 50th anniversary
of their graduation, they become members of the College's Fifty Year Club.
An active group, the club quickly looked to Bill Calvert to provide leadership.
As President of the Fifty Year Club for two years, Bill headed a group
of officers that planned lectures, cultural activities and socials for
fellow graduates, while continuing to serve as an NAC member.
Bill Calvert is an exceptional Colorado College alumnus. He is a greatly
appreciated alumni volunteer - the alumnus who finds many ways to give
back to the College and inspires many others to follow his lead.
