LOUIS T. BENEZET AWARD RECIPIENT 1998

Dr. Andrew Spielman '52

A walk in the woods may be safer one day thanks to Andy Spielman's research on vector-bone disease. While many of his discoveries are related to mosquito biology, malariology, filaria research, and arbovirology, his recent efforts have largely been directed toward an analysis of the environmental factors that promote the transmission of Lyme disease and its various companion infections. The insects and ticks that transmit these pathogens depend on features of landscapes disturbed by human activity. Therefore, Andy believes relevant strategies for long-term improvement in combating these diseases should be based on a synthesis of ecological, genetic, physiological, microbiological, and immunological information and require a combination of laboratory and field work, a perfect task for a liberal arts graduate.

Not only does Andy's work include the discovery of the tick vector and research including testing of a vaccine against Lyme disease, but he has also developed methods for diagnosing malaria that are used worldwide. Andy's research is widely published, authoring nearly 300 publications including articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, Science and American Naturalist, Journal of Insect Physiologyand the American Journal of Tropical Medical Hygiene. He holds two patents and has trained many of the world's leading professors and researchers.

On more than one occasion, the Harvard School of Public Health has honored andy by naming him Best Teacher. he has been recognized for his work with a Medal of Honor from the American Mosquito Control Association, a Merit Award from the National Institutes of Health, and the Freddy and Monet Awards for Best Scientific Films. Colorado College is proud to present him with the Benezet Award for his outstanding career achievements, in the belief that his accomplishments precisely meet the criteria for the Louis T. Benezet Award, "...innovation or research that has advanced a profession or a cause and/or extraordinary contributions and achievements that have improved people's lives..."
