| GRESHAM RILEY AWARD RECIPIENT 1997 |
Richard E. Wood
Know to several
decades of CC alumni as "the man who made it all possible,"
Dick can claim a good deal of credit for creating the Colorado College
of the latter part of the 20th century. He combined a demand for excellence
with vision and compassion to build an eclectic student boy. Many alumni
of the past three decades will recall that Dick took a chance on them,
based on their personal qualities and determination to attend Colorado
College.
During his career, Dick was active at both the state and national levels
in the admission profession. He was a co-founder of the Common Application
service, which now includes over 180 private colleges and universities;
held various offices in the Colorado Council on High School College Relations;
and participated in countless scholarship selection committees. In fact,
Dick still comes out of retirement each spring to spend a week in Denver
with the Boettcher Scholarship Selection Committee. Many admission professionals
around the country consider Dick Wood to be their mentor, and all who
know him admire his unique blend of integrity, humor and lack of pretension.
The numbers alone are staggering: During his thirty years at Colorado
College, Dick Wood read over 100,000 admission applications and admitted
most of the current alumni body. but the quality of Dick's service --
his loyalty to the college, his advocacy for the liberal arts and his
early commitment to multiculturalism -- characterize his enduring contribution
to CC.
We are pleased to honor Dick Wood's efforts toward the betterment of Colorado
College, and its student and alumni populations. His longstanding commitment
to CC is an outstanding example of the significant contributions recognized
by the Riley Award.
