LOUIS T. BENEZET AWARD RECIPIENT 1997

William B. Stafford '63

William "Bill" Stafford is Executive Director of the trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle, an organization that promotes the greater Seattle region as one of North America's premier international gateways and commercial centers. Between 1971 and 1990, he held a number of positions for the City of Seattle, including Deputy Mayor to Charles Royer and Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Relations, where he was responsible for the national, state, regional, and international relations of the city. he has been involved in a number of national urban advisory committees, chairing the National Urban Consortium among cities on urban research. In 1986, he was selected "Outstanding Public Employee" by the Municipal League of Seattle-King County. bill's dedication to public service is longstanding and noteworthy.

He has been active in the Seattle community, serving on the boards of the Woodland Park Zoological Society, Seattle Children's Museum, the Public Defender Association and the Burke Museum. He served on the Washington State Trade Advisory Council, and is currently a member of the U.S. Department of Commerce's District Export Council, chair of the International Advisory Committee of the Seattle Community College System, a member of the International Advisory Board of the University for Washington's Center for International Advisory Committee of the Small Business Administration.

Bill's efforts have resulted in the establishment of a program to provide free medical care to the homeless, refurbishment of the Woodland Park Zoo and construction of low income housing.

Colorado College is privileged to present a Benezet Award in acknowledgement of Bill's outstanding efforts to strengthen and enrich the community of Seattle.
