S. Paul Reville '71
Paul Reville's contribution to education reform is extraordinary. He
is Co-Director of the Pew Forum on Standards-Based Reform at the Harvard
University Graduate School of Education, a program that serves as a national
think tank/consortium of top education reform elders who focus their efforts
on the implementation of standards-based school reform in states and major
American cities.
After 12 1/2 years service, Paul recently left his position as executive
director and co-founder of the Alliance for Education, a privately-supported,
multi-service foundation dedicated to improving elementary and secondary
public education in Central Massachusetts. They Alliance specializes in
professional development opportunities for educators, leadership and policy
development, and creating liaisons between the community, schools and
local business partners, who provide financial assistance, materials and
volunteers.
As co-founder, board member and executive director of the Massachusetts
Business Alliance for Education, Paul was a key contributor to the publication,
Every Child a Winner!, which became the basic foundation for
the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993.
Paul currently chairs the Massachusetts Education Reform Review Commission,
a position to which he was appointed by Governor William Weld in 1996.
The Commission's role is to oversee the state's fulfillment of its responsibilities
under the Education Reform Act.
In 1996, paul completed a five-year term as a member of the State Board
of Education, and served on the Board's Executive Committee, the Committee
on Financially Distressed School Systems and the Education Reform Implementation
Task Force. He was also the chairman of the Massachusetts commission on
Time and Learning, a group that shaped state policy recommendations on
the optimum use of educational time.
Mr. Reville began his career as a VISTA worker in Somerville, Massachusetts,
where he was a founder, co-principal and teacher in an alternative high
school for dropouts. For the past 20 years, he has been involved in various
forms of school-business collaboration, initially serving for nine years
as executive director of Dynamy, a 13th-year, experience-based, independent
boarding school.
Paul is a frequent speaker, writer, and editor on educational matters,
and serves on a variety of local, state, and national boards and committees,
all of which aim to improve opportunities for youth. He has received numerous
professional and civic awards, including the 1994 Humanitarian Award from
the National Conference; distinguished service Awards from Massachusetts
Association of Secondary School Superintendents and Association of Secondary
School Administrators, as well as the Central Massachusetts Superintendents
Association; and the Outstanding Young Leader Award form the Worcester
Jaycees.
The College recognizes Paul's significant commitment to, and innovation
in, the educational arena and proudly presents a Benezet Award in honor
of his efforts.
