Robert H. Rawlings '47
Not
only does Bob Rawlings exemplify excellence as a newspaper editor and
publisher but he also demonstrates a solid and long-term commitment to
his community. Bob rose through the ranks of the family-owned Chieftain,
which is now 128 years old and employs about 225 employees, serving
some 25,000 square miles in southern Colorado with a circulation of 50,000.
He began in advertising sales, was appointed general manager in 1963 and
became publisher in 1980. the paper is deeply involved in community organizations,
assisting them with publicity, advertising and financial support. In 1994,
the Chieftain and the Robert Hoag Rawlings Foundation provided
more than $500,000 in grants to the community. Community support is integral
to Bob's management of the paper because "Pueblo is our permanent
home."
In 1994, Bob was recognized as the Colorado Business Leader of the Year
by the Colorado Association of Commerce an Industry. In 1993, he was named
Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Pueblo chamber of Commerce. he
also has received the Distinguished Service Award from the U.S. Junior
Chamber of Commerce and was selected as Colorado Newspaper Person of the
year in 1989.
Other professional involvement includes: corporate directorship of the
First National Bank of Pueblo, immediate past chairman of Colorado National
Bank - Pueblo's community board of directors, and a member of the Air
Force Academy Foundation and the University of Southern Colorado Foundation,
as well as serving on the board and committees of the Colorado Association
of Commerce and Industry.
Colorado College is proud to award Bob Rawlings the prestigious Benezet
Award for his outstanding contributions both to journalism and to his
community.
