Solomon M. Nkiwane '64
Solomon Nkiwane's story begins in Africa, where he was born the son of
a shepherd. He began school at the age of nine, attending elementary school
in Rhodesia and high school in South Africa. He studied at Colorado College
as one of two participants in the African Scholarship Program of American
Universities.
Solomon joined the University of Zimbabwe in 1982 when he was invited
to return to the country after the 1980 change in governments. About this
appointment he says, "For the first time in my teaching career, I
am able to teach exactly what I have wanted to teach and what I was trained
for."
In his work at the University, Solomon has sought to improve the quality
of teaching and to inculcate something of the spirit and dynamics of the
liberal arts curriculum in to an English-style university system. He has
acted as a personal counselor and confidant to many students, has provided
the kind of direct and supportive teaching that he experienced at Colorado
College, and has long sought to establish closer ties between CC and the
University.
Solomon also served as Head of the Social Sciences Program at the Snowdon
Campus of Vanier College (1975-82), concurrently holding a position as
Professor of International Law at Concordia University.
As an active participant in the politics of international diplomacy, he
has published extensively in the area of International Relations, as well
as on such topics as refugees, peace research, the Middle East and Southern
Africa. He is an active member of several international organizations,
including the International Peace Research Association, the International
Studies Association and the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
In 1994, Solomon was appointed as a United Nations observer in the first
democratic elections in South Africa.
Colorado College is privileged to call Solomon Nkiwane one of its own
and to present him with the Benezet Award in recognition of his dedication
to education.
