LOUIS T. BENEZET AWARD RECIPIENT 1996

Richard R. Green '59

Richard Green heads an organization responsible for charting the cable television industry's course in technology. CableLabs in a non-profit, R&D consortium backed by all the major cable operators in North America, including Time Warner, Cox Cable, Comcast, Viacom Cable and Continental Cablevision. Richard describes his group's work as "not so much to invent as to innovate." One of CableLab's primary tasks is ensuring that cable networks can evolve smoothly in to the communications infrastructure of the future, making advanced telecommunications affordable and accessible.

Prior to his work at CableLabs, Richard served as Senior Vice President of Broadcast Operations and Engineering for PBS, where his contributions included construction of a national network distribution and control center for public broadcasting. He has also worked as Director of the CBS Advanced Television Technology Laboratory and was manager of the studio production facility at ABC in Hollywood. Richard's professional accomplishments include work in digital and high definition television (HDTV), and production of the first series of experimental programs mastered in HDTV.

Richard is also chairman of a United Nations organization concerned with worldwide telecommunications standards, as well as chairman of a working party of the FCC Advisory Committee on HDTV. he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers. He has authored more than 55 technical papers on topics ranging from TV production to electro-optical and laser research. Most recently, he was voted Communications Electronics Digest's "Man of the Year" and was selected by Electronic Media in 1993 as one of 12 people in U.S. media to watch.

Richard Green exemplifies the characteristics recognized by the Benezet Award. his research and innovation in the cable television industry have been exceptional.
