GRESHAM RILEY AWARD RECIPIENT 1996

Martha Jane Cauvel

Professor Emerita, Jane Cauvel, was the outstanding role model for women students when women faculty members were rare. Her presence at the College was instrumental in attracting increasing numbers of women faculty to the campus, and she remains a model and mentor for them today. She has inspired many students, both male and female, to pursue academic careers but, above all, she has inspired them to appreciate beauty and to attain the wisdom that goes with the examined life in a world of complex and varying cultures.

In 36 years of teaching, Jane served as chair of the Philosophy Department (1968-79) and was honored in 1987 for "unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching." She is among the major contributors to the development and expansion of Asian Studies at the College. She has also given unstintingly of herself to her faculty colleagues and to the Colorado College community. Among many administrative contributions, she served on the highest-elected faculty committees, conducted the presidential search that brought us Kathryn Mohrman and has served President Mohrman as special faculty assistant from 1994-1996. Jane has exemplified and embodied liberal learning at Colorado College.

The College is pleased to honor Jane Cauvel with the Riley Award for the rich legacy she leaves our Colorado College community.
