Thomas Harrison Mahoney '67
Colorado
College has the good fortune to be a high priority for Dr. Tom Mahony.
As a team physician for the CC athletic department, he has bestowed a
unique gift that has touched hundreds of lives. As a recipient of his
time, energy, and expertise, the College is in good company. Dr. Mahony
has served as orthopedic consultant for the Olympic Training Center, and
as orthopedic surgeon for the National Sports Festival, the Pan-American
Games, the World University Games and the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. All
of this has been in addition to his work in a busy group practice and,
more recently, a practice of his own.
"T," as he is known, has always found time for his alma mater.
Tom Mahony's pro bono service to the College spans 16 years.
He has consistently gone beyond the call of duty to help our student athletes
not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. In the words of head
athletic trainer Bruce Kola:
"The general public may see our physicians at competitions and conclude
that their primary purpose is game coverage. What they don't see are the
countless late night hours in the emergency room when our athletes suffer
serious injury or illness after normal office hours, the thousands of
pre-season physical exams given through the years without compensation,
the multiple 'house calls' made to the training room to check on the progress
of an athlete who has minimal insurance coverage or who simply needs reassurance
and counseling related to an injury. 'T' is a special individual who can
empathize with an athlete after a season- or career-ending injury, who
makes the time to communicate directly with parents about a necessary
surgical procedure, and who believes medical decisions should be weighed
in the context of the lifelong health of the individual and not the short-term
context of competition.
In an era when the medical profession is being chastised for being less
than humanistic, I marvel at the number of our alumni who are now M.D.s
and allied health professionals who learned about 'people skills' by following
and observing 'T'.
The concept of alumni involvement and giving back to the College is a
strong tradition at this institution. Very few people can demonstrate
a stronger continuing commitment to Colorado College than Dr. Mahony."
Thomas Mahony truly embodies the attributes celebrated by the Lloyd E.
Worner Award: "outstanding loyalty, service and generosity to the
College."
