John Kenneth Langum '33
John K. Langum exemplifies not only stellar career achievement but also
lifelong learning. As an internationally known economist specializing
in the American economy, he has been a scholar, educator, researcher,
central banker, consultant, director of financial institutions and entrepreneur.
As a consultant he has advised key policy-making officials of many major
institutional investors in the U.S. and in Canada. As an expert on public
utility finance and fair rate of return, Dr. Langum has testified before
public utility commissions, courts and regulatory agencies in most U.S.
states and in Canada.
Early in his career, he served as vice president of the Federal Reserve
Bank of Chicago and as associate economist for the Federal Reserve System's
Federal Open Market Committee. In 1938, Dr. Langum was elected a Fellow
of the american Association for the Advancement of Science.
He continues as an economic consultant and as president of his own research
and publications firm, Business Economics, Inc. the firm provides in-depth
studies for financial institutions and businesses on American economic
trends and their significance for credit and capital markets. Dr. Langum
recently retired as director, after 42 years of service, of the Selected
Mutual Funds. He has also served as director of First Federal Savings
and Loan of Elgin (Illinois) and Talman Home Federal Savings and Loan
of Chicago. He is chairman of the board of the eleven Founders Mutual
Funds in Denver. He has also branched out into academia and writing. through
the years he has been on faculties of the University of Minnesota, Northwestern,
the University of California, as well as lecturing at various graduate
institutions. Langum has authored numerous articles and is known for The
Langum Report on the U.S. Economy.
He has also found time for extensive community activities. From board
positions on urban planning commissions and environmental protection entities
such as the Nature Conservancy, the Wilderness Society and Sierra Club,
to symphony and baroque music boards, John Langum has shown a genuine
commitment to civic involvement. Colorado College is proud to add to Dr.
Langum's long list of accomplishments by presenting him with the prestigious
Louis T. Benezet Award.
