Jerry L. Northern '62
To say that Jerry Northern is accomplished in his field is to be guilty
of grave understatement. His curriculum vitae is nearly a dozen pages
long, a veritable catalog of professional achievements.
Upon completion of his doctoral education, Jerry spent the Vietnam years
on active duty at the U.S. Army Audiology and Speech Pathology Center
at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He returned to Colorado in 1970 to
join the faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and
to become Head of the Audiology Division at University Hospital. In addition
to his position as Professor in the Departments of Otolaryngology and
Pediatrics, he holds several affiliate appointments around the state and
has had over fifty other professional affiliations nationally and internationally
Dr. Northern is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
past-President of the American Academy of Audiology. He is active in planning
various continuing education activities and was the 1990 Chairman for
the 1990 National ASSHA Convention.
He has authored and edited twelve textbooks including several that have
foreign language editions. He is perhaps best know for Hearing in
Children and Hearing Disorders. He has written nearly thirty
chapters in other textbooks, and authored more than sixty scientific journal
articles on a wide variety of topics dealing with the evaluation of hearing
and auditory disorders. He serves as reviewer for several journals, is
on the Editorial Board of Ear & Hearing, and is the Editor-in-Chief
of Seminars in Hearing.
Dr. Northern travels extensively teaching and providing clinical
training in audiology in numerous third-world countries. He has worked
on nearly every continent and consults with a wide variety of commercial
firms, publishers and government agencies.
Jerry Northern embodies attainment in his field; such accomplishment richly
deserves our commendation.
