LLOYD E. WORNER AWARD RECIPIENT 1993

Margaret Tyson Barnes '27

"If you can help anybody in this world, I think you should. And I can't think of doing anything better for my country than trying to see that people are educated."

Margaret Tyson Barnes has been a vital force in the life of Colorado College for more than five decades, but the role that means the most to her is that of assuring a college education for scores of young men and women. She has been a good friend of faculty and students and has been the enabling force behind seeing that countless numbers benefit from an excellent science education at Colorado College. Margaret, along with her late husband Otis A. Barnes (a chemistry professor at CC from 1925-1962), is unquestionably one of the College's most generous benefactors.

Otis perceived a need for the College to attract good science students; Margaret proposed the solution. It was Margaret's inspiration to establish a trust fund to provide tuition for chemistry majors. She and her husband worked hard to fashion the Otis A. Barnes Chemistry Scholarship Fund to best meet the College's needs as well as the personal requirements of students. This led to their initial gift to the College in the mid-fifties, which has grown significantly in subsequent years.

The Trust provides not only four-year, full-tuition scholarships for chemistry majors, but also summer stipends for Barnes scholars to conduct research, and funds for distinguished-scholar lectures, as well as special equipment and publications for the chemistry department.

Until recent years, Mrs. Barnes was closely involved in the administration of the Trust and evaluation and selection of the scholars. Often referred to as the Barnes' "adopted children," many Barnes Chemistry Scholars have enjoyed a close personal relationship with their sponsors, even after leaving the College. Otis Barnes passed away in 1985, and Mrs. Barnes still resides in Colorado Springs.

Not only these scholars but the entire Colorado College community owe a debt of gratitude to Margaret Tyson Barnes, truly a woman who has lived by her words.
