Kathryn Renfro Lundy '39
Kathryn Lundy learned that she "belonged" in a library shortly
after she came to Colorado College. She remembers Coburn Library as the
perfect place to study, research her papers, and, yes, to meet a date
and make friends. In addition, Katy worked as a student assistant gaining
work experience and wise counseling from Colorado College Head Librarian
Louise Kampf.
After earning her library science degree, Katy embarked on her 40-year
career as a librarian. Beginning as an assistant cataloger at Stephens
College, Katy Lundy found herself in more and more responsible positions,
culminating at the University of Nebraska where she had advanced to the
rank of Professor of Planning and Research by the time of her retirement
in 1980.
Many people have successful careers. but something has always set Katy
Lundy apart from the ordinary. As a scholar, her contributions to the
literature of library science have been frequent and significant. She
has presented papers at numerous regional and national conventions, contributed
to many periodicals; and in 1978, was the first librarian to receive the
Nebraska faculty development fellowship. Her book, Women View Librarianship--Nine
Perspectives, provides the views of nine outstanding women administrators
in large research libraries and in library schools, resulted from that
fellowship.
Kathryn Lundy's career was also characterized by participation and leadership
in many professional organizations on the local, state, and national levels.
In addition to her induction into Beta Phi Mu, the international library
honor society, Katy offered her time and talent to the Nebraska Library
Association, serving as president. She was also elected as a member of
the board of directors of the Association of College and Research Libraries.
Katy's ultimate honor was being elected to serve on the American Library
Association Council from 1957 to 1961 and again from 1967 to 1969. The
Nebraska Library Association recognized her outstanding record of service
with its Meritorious Service Award which cited the"far-reaching results
of her influence."
The love of words, of reading and learning has served Kathryn Renfro Lundy
well. She, in turn, has served others well by adding to the development
of her profession. All who love learning can thank this special woman
for her special contributions to her field. and if colorado College Librarian
Louise Kampf could be here, she would lead us in celebrating the success
of her protege.
