John P. Chalik '67
In case people ever wonder why John Chalik has been, in his own words,
"busier than ever," since his retirement from running a food
specialty business, they need only note his involvement at Colorado College.
John completed his term as an alumni trustee (1987-92) by chairing the
Presidential Screening Committee. He was then promptly elected by the
College Board of Trustees to serve as a charter trustee (1992-98). While
on the board, he has been, and will continue to be, active on the Trustee
Audit Committee, the Trustee Budget and Finance Committee, the Trustee
Student Life Committee, and an ad hoc member of the Socially Responsible
Investment Committee. At the same time, John also serves on the Strategic
Planning Commission on the Greek System.
In addition, John's list of busy post-College endeavors has included more
volunteer jobs, such as alumni admissions representative, class agent,
metro area chair, campaign volunteer in California's Bay area, and member
since 1984 of the National Alumni Council (NAC). The strength and vitality
of the NAC as we know it today is due in great part to John's vision and
energy. As president of the Class of 1967 John has planned every reunion
for his class, including this, the 25th. And when John Chalik plans, he
plans. the Class of '67 got an exciting three extra days this year--at
the Baca campus with catering by their president.
To describe John Chalik as enthusiastic about Colorado College may be
the understatement of the year. He is committed to our goal of excellence.
When he says he thinks campus life needs attention, these are not just
idle words--he intends to keep himself informed on the subject and be
ready with suggestions. When he says he supports the innovative block
plan, he truly believes in its contributions to the College's academic
program. When he says he thinks the most important issues in higher education
are how colleges will meet the challenges of the next century, he means
to do something to make sure the challenges are met.
Active as he is in College affairs, John is not really retired. He still
works as a consultant in the food business and is a real estate investor
and attorney. He is president of the board of directors for the Chabot
Canyon Racquet Club and is currently chairing the design committee working
to rebuild the club after the Oakland fire. He is also treasurer for the
Berkeley Wine and Food Society.
John Chalik was among the most active students during the late '60s, and
it is obvious from the way he generously shares his time and his talent
with Colorado College now that he continues to care about his alma mater.
And in bestowing on him the Worner Award for achievement and demonstrated
dedication to Colorado College, the school is showing that we care about
him.
