| LLOYD E. WORNER AWARD RECIPIENT
1991 |
William I. Spencer '39
Bill Spencer has received many awards for his outstanding accomplishments.
He has had remarkable success in the banking industry, rising from a job
in the credit department at Chemical Bank to president of Citicorp and Citibank.
His reputation in banking and business has earned him directorships on numerous
boards. He has also served on numerous non-profit boards nationwide. Today
we honor William Spencer for his devoted service to Colorado College.
The Grand Junction native transferred to Colorado College upon the recommendation
of his high school counselor, a Colorado College alumna. He credits the
education he received at the College with making the difference in his life.
Bill Spencer has contributed his time, knowledge, skill, and personal resources
in extraordinary ways. Elected as a Colorado College Charter Trustee in
1967, he served as chairman of the Centennial Campaign in 1974, bringing
the College's first campaign to a successful conclusion.
Bill became one of the College's most active Trustees, serving on the Audit
Committee, as chair, the Development Committee, and the Executive Committee.
Elected Chairman of the Board in 1984, he provided the leadership that carried
the College successfully through its five-year $43.5 million campaign.
For over 30 years, 24 of them on the Board of Trustees, Bill has given generously
of his services and successfully sought support from others. In doing so,
he has made it possible for thousands of others to have the opportunities
offered to him over 50 years ago.
Bill Spencer retired from the Board of Trustees in May of 1991. But his
service to the College has not ended, for Bill has now agreed to lead a
new effort, the establishment of an athletic endowment fund at Colorado
College.
