Jane Stevenson Day '51
"She is a dynamo," according to Professor Paul Kutsche of the
Colorado College anthropology department. This highly regarded archaeologist
is the author of numerous publications on the Mesoamerican art and archaeology.
She has created exhibits on the Aztecs, Costa Rican treasures, ancient Mexican
culture, the Maya and the Indians of Peru at the Denver Museum of Natural
History, where she is Chief Curator. She has worked with museums in Mexico
City, the University of Texas, and with National Geographic.
Jane Stevenson Day is an inspiration to all students. Her outstanding accomplishments
as an archaeologist have been achieved in a brief time. Her path is evidence
that learning and exploring new ideas and knowledge need never end. Jane
Day chose a traditional path upon graduation, dedicating her energy and
abilities to husband, family, and community. It was her volunteer work at
the Museum of Natural History that prompted her return to school over twenty
years after her graduation from Colorado College for a M.A. and Ph.D. Soon
after earning her Ph.D. in Anthropology (Archaeology) in 1984, she was named
Curator of Archaeology at the Museum of Natural History. Her considerable
administrative skills led to her appointment as Chief Curator in 1988. In
addition to her administrative and exhibit responsibilities, she develops
public programs and works with the museum's publication program, all while
maintaining on-going research. She continues to write and teach at the University
of Colorado at Denver and has been a visiting faculty member at Colorado
College.
A member of the American Association of Museums, the American Anthropological
Association, the Society for American Archaeology and the Colorado Council
of Professional Archaeologists, Jane Day is well respected by her peers,
her family, and her alma mater.
