David B. Shaw '57
Alumni who are curious about how to help their college could well afford
a look at David Shaw's involvement with Colorado College. Dave Shaw got
involved in alumni activities in the late 1960's as a class agent, encouraging
his classmates to do their share in supporting the College financially.
he was also active in recruiting students from the Pueblo area and advising
students about careers.
By the early 1980's fellow alumni elected him president of the National
Alumni council. During his term, the National Alumni Council took on a
national complexion for the first time, with representatives from states
outside of Colorado serving on this important governing body of the Alumni
Association. He played an important role on the Development and Building
committees of the Board of Trustees during the planning for the now completed
Colorado College Campaign. During his presidency, the NAC conceived of
the Benezet and Worner Awards Program.
When, while he was president of the NAC, alumni giving to the Annual Fund
exceeded 40% for the first time, Dave was more concerned that 60% of our
alumni did not support the Annual Fund.
At Dave's urging the College agreed to provide a training weekend for
alumni volunteers. since that time, hundreds of volunteers from around
the country have traveled to the College to learn how to better accomplish
their volunteer goals. Much of the growth in alumni commitment is traced
to this important activity.
Dave completed his term as president of the NAC several years ago, but
his good work on behalf of the College has continued. The influence of
alumni grew when Dave's proposal to increase the term of the Alumni Association's
President on the Board of Trustees from two years to four was accepted.
The Alumni Association has called upon Dave at least twice to revise and
update the Constitution and Bylaws. Dave was influential in adding more
academic elements to homecoming, reminding us all of the basic purpose
of our time here. He has served on numerous committees, advising the Alumni
Association and College in alumni participation, in planned giving, and
until recently he served on the All-College Committee on Selective Divestment.
