Charles R. Daily '25

The list of Charles Daily's accomplishments as a scientist and engineer is overwhelming. His career began at the Bell Telephone Labs, and then he transferred to the business of sound motion pictures, first developing new sound recording systems then moving on to develop new equipment and methods for all branches of the industry. he spent twenty years in such work with Paramount Studios.

During those years, Charles Daily's work was recognized by numerous professional awards and citations. Among the honors were five Academy Awards for noteworthy scientific and technical developments. He has also consulted with the J. Arthur Rank organization in England on motion picture and TV projects.

Following his years at Paramount, Dr. Daily served as a senior project engineer with the Hughes Aircraft Company for ten years, working on sophisticated new imaging and photographic systems for the Department of Defense and on space projects for N.A.S.A.

In addition to receiving the Academy Awards, he was also invited to be a fellow in both the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and the Society of Photographic Scientists and Engineers. Active in both of these organizations and others in the U.S. and abroad, Dr. Daily held numerous offices, published many papers, and made many presentations to societies, government agencies and outside companies. Charles met his late wife of over 60 years, Ester Rouner '27, while both were students at Colorado College. Together they were active in their church and community activities. And, while Charles Daily was making improvements in the media that entertained and informed us all, he still managed to enjoy photography as a hobby, winning awards in that arena as well. he enjoyed climbing mountains, played tennis and golf and, in more recent years, became a lawn bowling champion.
