LOUIS T. BENEZET AWARD RECIPIENT 1989

Allen Wray Mathies, Jr. '52

Scientist, educator, doctor, manager, community leader: all describe Allen Mathies.

While a senior at Colorado College, Allen was a teaching assistant in the zoology department. That duty prepared him for an instructor's position the following summer and also introduced him to his future wife, Weta, who sat in the front row of his freshman zoology class. With Weta by his side, Allen proceeded to establish himself first as an outstanding medical student, then as a physician and teacher. As Allen climbed the academic ranks at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, he was simultaneously on staff as head physician of the communicable disease service and senior attending physician in pediatrics at the Los Angeles County, University of Southern California Medical Center. His academic career culminated in ten years as dean of the USC School of Medicine. during those years, he continued his practice as a member of the Children's hospital of Los Angeles.

Allen's work in pediatrics, parasitology, and infectious and tropical diseases has brought him worldwide attention, including honors from the Mexican Academy of Medical Sciences, USC School of Medicine, and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He has been in great demand as a consultant in infectious disease control.

Dr. Mathies' name can be found in over 70 publications and scientific journals. He is also active in major national and regional medical and medical research associations, serving on or chairing boards, councils, and committees. he currently sits on the boards of Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co., the L.A. Chapter of the Red Cross, the Editorial Board of the Western Journal of Medicine, and the Board of Occidental College.

In addition to his medical associations, Allen has been involved in his community and with his alma mater. Nearly all of his non-medical interests seem to focus on issues concerning children and/or education. His Colorado College involvement has been significant. He has served as a class agent for the Class of 1952, volunteered for work on the Los Angeles area campaign committee, and served as an alumni trustee on the College Board of Trustees.
