Edward H. Honnen '21
Ed Honnen has given himself fully to people and things important to him:
his wonderful wife (met at Colorado College during compulsory chapel!),
children and grandchildren, his construction firm, and his Caterpillar
Tractor franchise. He built some of Colorado's most important roads, dams,
and other major construction projects, including Fort Carson. During World
War II he directed similar work all over the world with the Naval Civil
Engineer Corps.
His love of horses led to an interest in equine medical research and consequent
terms of service on federal and state advisory boards. In 1965 Ed took
up team roping, winning numerous competitions and becoming an important
member and director of the country's major Quarter Horse Association and
Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Colorado College has benefited from Ed's generosity. Alumni chose Ed to
serve on the Board of Trustees in 1946. Later, he returned to the Board
as a Charter Trustee, serving until 1982. during those 36 years, Ed offered
his wisdom, good sense, and personal resources to make Colorado College
an ever-better institution. he also contributed in significant ways to
the colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Denver Botanical Gardens, and
Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Ed has not only raised money from others, but has given of his own resources.
the Honnen tennis courts were built in large part through his generosity.
The Honnen Ice Rink was built in 1963 thanks to Ed. He then saw the need
to enclose it for year-round use and to fund the construction of new locker
room space in 1984. Ed also helped furnish the alumni house, a home he
spent many happy hours in when it was occupied by the Tutt family.
While Ed was unable to graduate with his class, his accomplishments did
not go unnoticed. In 1960 the College awarded him an honorary bachelor
of science degree for distinguished achievement. In 1983 the College recognized
him with an honorary doctorate. Colorado State University followed suit
in 1985.
When asked why he has offered so much to Colorado College for so many
years, he talks about his parents. His father's admiration for Ed's mother's
Glasglow University education and skill as a teacher made him see to it
that Ed and his brothers got an education. Ed in turn was so appreciative
of his father's efforts that he modestly says he has tried to do his best
to get an education and to help others do so.
