Robert M. Brugger '51
Bob Brugger is an internationally known authority in nuclear engineering
and research reactor operation. He has just completed 15 years as director
of the University of Missouri Research Reactor, the highest flux, highest
power reactor at a U.S. university. Prior to assuming this responsibility,
Bob managed the Nuclear Technology division of Aerojet Nuclear Company.
His preparation for these challenges came from a variety of assignments
with Department of Energy contractor companies.
Bob is now active in research for neutron cancer therapy. Among his credits
is the development of neutron beam filters for use in such therapy. Recently,
he developed a neutron moderator to produce a beam to be used for cancer
therapy and diagnostics.
Dr. Brugger's ideas are clearly valued by those in his field. He is frequently
invited to make presentations to professional groups both on his areas
of personal research and on research reactors. He has authored or co-authored
over 100 publications and given over 175 technical presentations and reports.
He accepted an invitation to become a Fellow of the american Physical
Society and the American Nuclear Society as well as numerous other professional
associations. He has recently served on the National Research Council,
National Academy of Science, and the committee on University Research
Reactors.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bob has also managed
an active family life, raising two children with his wife Barbara, also
Colorado College Class of 1951. Since graduation Barbara has been involved
in educational and library projects, receiving her M.A. in library science
at the University of Missouri. Both Bob and Barbara are active in their
church, and have maintained a lifelong interest in and concern for the
well-being of Colorado College.
