Dear Colorado College alumni,
The Colorado College Alumni Office is pleased to announce another alumni
travel opportunity — a unique cycling adventure in Vermont, August
8 - 12, 2005.
My name is Dorothy Pacheco Nichols '87and I am the President of the Alumni
Association Board. Together, with my husband, Brad, a Vermont native,
I will be leading this four-day trip in the Shelburne and Lake Camplain
area. Both of us have several years of experience leading bike tours in
Vermont.
Besides
connecting with the college and building relationships with fellow alumni,
you'll have the chance to ride your bike along the roads of Vermont, pedaling
across covered bridges, catching glimpses of working rural farm life and
eating amazing food since we will be staying at quaint Vermont Inns. There
is limited availability for this trip so sign
up today!

Pedal
through rich farm country, green pastures, and peaceful landscapes of
apple orchards, corn fields, and grazing cows. Time-travel to such historic
villages as Charlotte, Vergennes, and Shelburne. Ride along the shores
of sparkling Lake Champlain (the sixth largest natural lake in the U.S.)
and take your bike on an optional ferry ride to historic Essex, New York.
Cross the Pulp Mill Covered Bridge and explore the handsome college town
of Middlebury, home of some of Vermont’s best collections of crafts,
antiques, and local art. In short, experience the essence of Vermont on
this superb midweek tour.
We
spend our first two nights at the Heart of the Village Inn, a “casually
elegant” Victorian inn that has been serving the people of Shelburne
since it was built in 1886. Innkeeper Pat Button delights us with supremely
comfortable rooms tastefully decorated with period furniture, and her
excellent food highlights locally grown produce. Shelburne is well known
for its marvelous museum, and the village itself has great antique stores,
lovely turn-of-the-century buildings, and within a few hundred yards of
the inn, a delightful country store.
Wednesday
and Thursday nights we stay at the Strong House Inn in Vergennes. Here
we enjoy excellent meals as the guests of Mary and Hugh Bargiel in their
lovingly restored historic inn with its expansive lawn and walking paths.
Vergennes is an interesting 19th-century town enhanced by the Otter Creek,
a lovely meandering river that flows through the town, past one of America’s
earliest shipyards, and culminates in an impressive 38-foot waterfall.
This
tour offers fantastic country scenery, superb lakeside riding, and mountain
vistas. It includes country stores, antiques, Vermont crafts, two lovely
historic inns, and visits to some of our most picturesque and interesting
towns and villages. It’s a truly eclectic and delightful Vermont
experience.
