Hitchcock in the 50's

English Professor John Simons’ students will view five classic films by transplanted Englishman, Alfred Hitchcock. Working within the suspense genre, Hitchcock made a series of brilliant and provocative films in the turbulent American 1950s that dealt with such issues as the politics and psychology of the Cold War (North by Northwest), women's place as rebels in a traditionally masculine-centered society (Rear Window), issues of the complex nature of sexuality (Strangers on a Train and Psycho), and the obsession with psychoanalysis that so captivated the post-war years in American society (Vertigo).
