Dr. Don A. Linger '53

Dr. Linger received his BS degree in Civil Engineering in 1953 from Colorado College, and an MS degree in Civil Engineering from New Mexico State University while employed as a rocket power plant research engineer at White Sands Missile Range. He received a Ph.D. in structural engineering from Iowa State University in 1960, and did postgraduate studies at M.I. T. on underground structures.

He began his teaching career as associate professor of civil engineering at New Mexico State University in 1960, and in 1962 became Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Arizona. He received international visibility as director and chairman for the 1964 Department of Defense sponsored First International Symposium on Design of Underground Hardened Facilities.

From 1969 to 1975, Dr. Linger was professor and chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. In 1972, he initiated a program for graduate degrees in environmental science and served as the director and administrator for a unique interdisciplinary educational program on environmental law.

Dr. Linger joined the Defense Nuclear Agency in July 1981 as chief of the strategic structures division. In March 1987, he was appointed director of the test directorate where he managed DNA's underground nuclear, and high explosive, and simulator test programs. In January 1996, he was appointed director of program directorate for the Defense Special Weapons Agency (DSWA) and assumed responsibility for the Cooperative Threat Reduction, Counterproliferation, Treaty Verification Technology, Hard Target Defeat, Force Protection and numerous special programs. In October 1998, he was appointed deputy for technical programs of the newly organized Defense Threat Reduction Agency/ Counterproliferation Directorate.

In 1996, he received the Senior Executives Association's Executive Excellence Award. In 2000 he received the Presidential Rank Award for SES Executives. He is the author of more than 20 technical publications.
