David D. Finley

David D. Finley’s career at Colorado College spanned more than 35 years. He served as a political science professor, department chair and dean of the faculty and college. He is a graduate of West Point, where he chose to study Russian and kindled his lifelong interest in Soviet affairs. After completing his military service with the U.S. Army he began graduate work in political science at Stanford University. He joined the Colorado College faculty in 1963 while still writing his doctoral dissertation. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford in 1966. He was awarded the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Grant in 1972.

His research has focused on comparative and international politics with an emphasis on Russian/former Soviet politics and foreign relations, particularly Russian-U.S. relations. From 1981 to 1985 he served as chairman of the political science department and was appointed dean of the college and the faculty in 1987, a position he held until 1992. In 1992 he returned to the classroom until his retirement in 1999.
