James Alan Johnson '56

James Alan Johnson graduated from Colorado College magna cum laude in 1956 with a degree in Eeonomics. He earned his MA in economics in 1959 from Stanford University. That same year he returned to Colorado College to begin his teaching career in the economics department and also took on the role of the Colorado College debate team coach.

Under Johnson’s tutelage, the 1979-1980 Colorado College Debate Team was ranked in the top ten in the United States for students’ ability to express themselves orally. During the 70s and 80s the team was one of the most active and successful extra-curricular activities on camp. Students competed with some of the best collegiate debate squads in the country while repeatedly sending its star members to the National Tournament for college and university debaters. During the 1976-1977 season, Johnson was named the Distinguished Coach of the Year in Forensics.

The American Forensic Association awarded Johnson the Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and an Outstanding Contribution to Service Award in 1999.

In addition to his duties with the Economics department and debate team, Johnson served as the Registrar of the College from 1970-1990.
