AP/IB Credit

AP Credit

There are several different AP Physics Exams.

AP Physics B

Students with a 4 or 5 on the AP Physics B exam will receive credit for PC141 and PC142. If a student would like to continue in physics, we recommend taking PC241 and PC242 before taking PC251.

AP Physics 1 & 2

This pair of tests will replace AP Physics B starting in the 2014-15 school year.  Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Physics 1 exam will receive credit for PC141 and may skip PC141, going directly into PC142.  Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Physics 2 exam will receive credit for PC142.  Because AP Physics 1 & 2 are not calculus-based, we recommend that students who would like to continue in physics take both PC241 and PC242 before taking PC251 (even if the student has done well on both the AP Physics 1 and 2 exams).

AP Physics C: Mechanics

Students receiving a 5 on the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam will receive 1 unit of credit and can skip PC241, but we recommend that students talk with a member of the physics faculty before doing so.  Students receiving a 4 will receive credit but must take PC241 before taking PC242.

AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism

Students receiving a 5 on the AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism exam will receive 1 unit of credit but must ask for approval from a physics faculty member before skipping PC242 and enrolling in PC251.  It has been found that even well-prepared students who skip PC242 have difficulty in PC251.  Students receiving a 4 will receive credit but must take PC242 before taking PC251.

IB Credit

Standard Level IB Physics

A score of 5, 6, or 7 will receive one unit of credit.  If a student would like to continue in physics, we recommend taking PC241 and PC242 before taking PC251.

Higher Level IB Physics

A score of 5, 6, or 7 will receive two units of credit, and a score of 4 will receive one unit.  Because IB Physics is not calculus-based, we recommend taking both PC241 and PC242 before PC251.  Students with an IB-HL Physics score of 7 may be able to skip PC241 and take PC242, but they must ask for approval of a member of the physics faculty before doing so.
