Steven Barta

Pianist Steve Barta has stayed true to his creative path for 30 years as a composer, recording artist, author, educator and speaker. He has performed his original works as a solo artist, with jazz ensembles and symphony orchestras. His contribution to the world of music includes 14 Recordings that reflect his many influences, particularly Brazilian, jazz and classical. After touring extensively with flutist Herbie Mann’s band Jasil Brazz, Steve released the widely acclaimed recording Blue River with special guest Herbie Mann. Since then Steve has released 14 recordings, including Another Life Brazil recorded with legendary jazz & Latin greats Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann, Dori Caymmi, and Paulinho da Costa. His recordings are available on his label Steve Barta Music, iTunes, Amazon.com, and CDBaby. Steve has written several works for symphony orchestra that have been performed worldwide, including Heritage Suite and A Midwest Dream. Steve’s latest work Jumpin’ Jazz - A Swinging Jungle Tale is a family concert for storyteller, jazz quintet and orchestra.

 Steve is a music educator with over 30 years of experience teaching intermediate to advanced students, educators and professional musicians. He also teaches private students from his studio in Colorado Springs, Colorado and offers online studies via Skype. Steve authored The Source, a book widely used by teachers and university programs worldwide. Published by Hal Leonard, with a foreword by Dr. Billy Taylor and enthusiastic endorsements by Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Clark Terry and Lionel Hampton, The Source has become the standard scale/chord reference book in music education. Recently, The Source was revised and re-released in a 2nd edition to include the classical music market. Endorsements from the classical world include classical pianists Jeffrey Biegel and John Bayless, and Composer/Conductor David Amram. Steve has released four books of his original compositions and arrangements, and arranged several books for Hal Leonard, most notably The Beatles Songbook. Steve has accepted more than 20 private commissions for symphonic and ensemble works. In 1991, Steve joined a distinguished list of concert pianists when he was recognized as a Steinway Artist. Steve loves hiking, gardening and the martial arts, where he holds a Black Belt Degree in American style Kenpo Karate.
