Seminar Write-Ups

Need some help doing your seminar writeup? Download our helpful Handout that will clarify the rules and expectations from these writeups.

JAVA
We use and recommend JGRASP to edit Java files. It is free to download from www.jgrasp.org.

You will also need to download the latest JDK from Oracle (formally Sun):http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html.

When installing the JDK, note the path that it is installing to, (for example C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.x_xx). You may want to move this folder to one without spaces, for simplicity (C:\java).

For Windows and Linux, downloads are available from Oracle's website. Download and install the JDK. Oracle also has instructions on their website:http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/documentation/install-windows-152927.html

Optional: You may need to add the java\bin folder to PATH variable under your environmental variables.

For Mac OS X, Java 1.6 is available through your software updater, or can be found at Apple Support, or from CNet Download. Once your software is installed or updated, you will then need to run:
Applications -> Utilities -> Java -> Java Preferences
Change the order of Java versions to use (Java application versions) so that Java SE 6 is on the top of the list. Check that Java 6 is correctly activated: You need to run a terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and to type the command: java -version
