A Campus on the Move

The Colorado College campus is transforming as it undergoes a number of construction projects on both the west and east sides of campus.

Building H almost completed (click for larger version)In the room lottery for this fall, more than 400 returning students competed for 61 spaces in the first building of the eight-structure, $23-million Western Ridge Housing Complex that will, by fall 2001, add more than 200 on-campus housing spots.  The new campus housing will boast an outdoor cafe, piazzas, and stellar views of Pikes Peak.  Several different floor plans will be available, including lofts, studios, flats, and apartments, all wired for computers. An adjacent area will feature additional language-oriented theme houses.  See the construction field where the other buildings will stand and the view of Pikes Peak from inside the building.

The Edith Gaylord House opened last fall with 20 apartments (some studios, some with individual or double rooms and shared living and kitchen spaces), a lounge, and the Marden Reading Room, named in honor of George Marden, a founding professor of the college.  See inside Building H -- photos #1, #2, and #3.  See a new map of the residence halls.

College Donates Homes to Local Families

In conjunction with Partners in Housing, among more than 12 groups involved, Colorado College donated three single-family homes to be made available as affordable housing to make way for the Western Ridge development, a series of new student theme houses and apartment complexes.

CC couldn't use the structures anymore, but The Hill – an affordable housing project in the 500 block of West Monument Street – could.  College officials wholeheartedly embraced the worthy cause and agreed to donate the trio of single-family residences as well as funds to help make the move. As a light rain fell at midnight, the houses that had been hoisted off their foundations and steadied across massive steel beams were trucked by caravan across town to a new neighborhood.  The residences will house families that make 50 percent or less of the area median household income and that have children.  The structures were moved to the 500 block of West Monument Street in mid-August, 1999.
