Beginner and Intermediate Ice Hockey
Rules of the Game
1. Proper identification is required to check out hockey equipment: no CC
ID-no equipment-no exceptions.
2. The IM Department will not provide sticks to participants.
3. Players are to remain off the ice while the zamboni is resurfacing.
4. A team that shows up to play with 6 or more players MUST designate and
dress an individual as the goalie. The shooter-tutor can only be used if there
are less than 6 players.
5. Only individuals “dressed to play” will be permitted in the
player’s box. All participants in the box must wear a helmet.
6. Only R.A.s are permitted to play on two teams and one of those teams must be their wing/hall team.
7. Only teams in the Beginner League must observe the Co-ed rule: at least
two members of the under-represented sex on the ice at all times.
8. Any shot taken on a plastic goalie (shooter-tutor) that is blocked and
remains in the crease will be deemed a dead puck. Rebounds that bounce out
of the crease may still be played and/or re-shot.
9. The clock will only be stopped in the last 2 minutes of the last period
if the game is within 2 points; otherwise, the clock will run the entire time.
10. There will be no overtime periods played during regular season games – the game will be recorded
as a “tie.”
3 vs. 3 League
Rules of the Game

4. A team that shows up to play with 4 or more players MUST designate and dress an individual as the goalie. The shooter-tutor can only be used if there are less than 4 players.
5. Only individuals “dressed to play” will be permitted in the player’s box. All participants in the box must wear a helmet.
6. Only R.A.s are permitted to play on two teams and one of those teams must be their wing/hall team.
7. The league will be Co-ed in nature. At least ONE member of the underrepresented sex must be on the ice at all times.
8. Each team is allowed only ONE Men’s Club Team player.
9. Club goalies may NOT play in goal. They are permitted to skate out, however
10. 3 on 3, plus one goalie.
11. The game will consist of two 20 minute halves. The clock will run the entire time.
12. Substitutions must be made within the designated substitution area at the blue line.
13. In the event that a puck leaves the zone, the official will dump a new puck in and play will continue. If the puck leaves by intentional means, possession will be given to the opposing team.
14. Serious infractions will result in a whistle and a penalty shot.
15.. When the puck is frozen by the goaltender or when a goal is scored, there will be a whistle. The puck will be placed behind the net and possession given to the defensive team. Once the opposing team has retreated behind the center mark, the whistle will be blown, and play will resume. The puck must be passed out from behind the net.
Game infractions
Fighting: at the discretion of the referees and/or league
supervisor, players guilty of fighting will be automatically ejected from
the game. If ejected from a game, a player is automatically suspended from
his/her team’s next TWO scheduled competitions. Any player using his/her
stick or other equipment as a weapon will be ejected from all IM competition.
Anytime a bench clears, a forfeit will be automatically called for that team(s)
and individual penalties handed down after consultation with the Director
of Intramurals and all parties involved.
Icing: icing occurs when a defensive players clears the puck
from his/her side of the rink and it passes the opposing team’s goal
line without any players from either team touching it. In all leagues icing
will be called from the red lines. Icing can also be called off if a goalie
plays the puck before it crosses the end goal line or goes through the goal
crease. Icing does not exist in the 3 vs. 3 League.
High sticking: if a player raises his/her stick above four
feet high sticking will be called. High sticking can be waived if an opposing
player gains control of the puck as a result of the high sticking.
Hand passing: hand passing is not allowed in either the offensive
or neutral zones. Infractions will result in a face-off at the spot of the
foul.
Slapshots: slapshots are NOT permitted in any of the leagues. In the event that a slapshot occurs, the
puck will be called back to the offending team’s defensive zone with
play resuming via face-off. If a slapshot occurs in the 3 vs. 3 League, possession will be given to the opposing team.
Offsides: a player attacking the opposition’s net is
considered offsides when he/she crosses the blue line ahead of the puck. Offsides does not exist in the 3 vs. 3 League.
Delayed offsides can be called if the puck is cleared out
of the zone and then dumped back into the zone before the player has a chance
to return to his/her defensive zone. Delayed offsides does not exist in the 3 vs. 3 League.
Other penalties: the list of penalties that a referee may
call includes, but is not limited to: checking, roughing, interference, elbowing,
bench penalty, and game misconduct.
