Globalization and Philosophy (in Mexico)
Block B: June 29 - July 17
1 CC unit (4 semester hours). Fulfills the Critical Perspectives: Diverse Cultures and Critiques at Colorado College. One unit of humanities credit.

In this installment of the course, the perspective will be that of the so-called "underdeveloped world." We will visit the U.S. - Mexico border, visit maquiladora factories and immigrant relief organizations. In Mexico City students will be exposed to the stark contrast between first world living standards and utmost poverty. We will visit the Mexico City Stock Exchange, as well as archeological sites that document the Aztec and Spanish expansionism in a sort of globalization avant la lettre.
In San Crisotbal de las Casas, Chiapas, we will be interacting with students and faculty of melel Xojobal, and institution that provides education and support to Indegenous children and women. We will be visiting the Autonomous Zapatista municipalities of Oventik and Ocosingo, as well as the Center for Human Rights Fray Bartolomé de las Casas.

Program fee (in addition to tuition): $3,030 includes lodging, most meals, course related activities, transportaion around Mexico, and airfare from El Paso. A non-refundable $500 deposit is due upon enrolling for this course. Colorado College students may apply for Intercultural Funds.
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor is required (e-mail ahernandez@ColoradoCollege.edu). Enrollment is limited to 12 students.
