AS 110 7920/ AS 210 7910 This course will be taught in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, and in the studios of Valand Art School at the University of Gothenburg. We will begin with direct observation and plein air drawing of the port city and of the coastal landscape. We will then mo v e into the print studio and use the drawings and ideas as sources for prints. We will also make our own paper for printing and drawing. Included in the course will be many field trips around the city and to the islands in the Gothenburg archipelago as well as an all day trip up the Bohuslan coast to visit bronze-age petroglyphs at a World Heritage site. Projects will be designed to develop the following: observational skills, increased understanding of formal visual language, technical confidence, personal expression, and the capacity to develop new concepts. Formal concepts such as light/illumination and symbolism will be integrated into the class. Gothenburg museums with collections of contemporary and historical Scandinavian artists who work with landscape will provide a cultural framework for our studio work. This class will be appropriate for students with all levels of art experience. Program Fee (in addition to tuition): $3,425. Does not include airfare and $650 for food and art supplies.
