HY 304 0110 This course addresses Paris as it has been imagined, thought about, and lived in during three epochs: the Middle Ages, the Age of Absolutism, and the modern period. Everyone carries with them a vision of the city. It develops from listening, looking, inhabiting and visiting, and reading. This vision is largely unconscious, but it informs how builders develop cities and how citizens navigate them. The city imagined and the city thought mark the city experienced. Through reading and on-site study of streets, neighborhoods, monuments, buildings, and museums, we'll try to grasp how Paris developed as the heart, brain and nerve center of France, how it changed in the last millennium, and why in these ways and not in others. Program fee (in addition to tuition): $1,825 includes lodging and course related activities. Airfare not included, and $300 for food not included.
