THE JOY OF CHAMBER MUSIC

THE JOY OF CHAMBER MUSIC
Thursday, June 19, 2008
4 p.m. – end of concert
Cost: $65 (includes concert ticket) $50 (with previously purchased concert ticket)
Instructor: Michael Grace
Location: Packard Hall, 5 W. Cache La Poudre, Room 9

Chamber music is written for a group of soloists, ranging in number from two to eight or more, originally written to be performed in a small, intimate venue such as an 18th-century salon or a small auditorium like Packard Hall. In the class, we will explore the special qualities of chamber music that make it such an exciting experience. We will come to understand how the small number of performers makes the listening experience so personal and the musical textures so clear. In a small performance venue, the listener can almost feel like he or she is sitting next to the player and feeling the individual melodic part just as the performer does. Some of the outstanding festival student musicians will be present to perform musical examples. The class will include an introduction to the works that will be a part of the concert.

This course is offered in conjunction with the concert by the Summer Music Festival Artists at 7:30 p.m. in Packard Hall. Participants will receive a ticket to the concert and a special group dinner in Rastall Dining Hall at Colorado College.

Michael D. Grace received his B.A. and M.A. from Colorado College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. He became instructor in music at Colorado College in 1967, assistant professor of music in 1971, and has been professor of music since 1986. Professor Grace founded and directs the Colorado College Collegium Musicum and the Summer Conservatory and Music Festival, and served as Dean of the Summer Session from 1987 to 1990. Grace was acting president of Colorado College from 1992-1993.
