After examining briefly the history of Buddhism along with an overview of its teachings, we will turn to a look at how and why Buddhism is growing so widely in the U.S. What are the appeals of its teachings and practices? What needs of contemporary Americans might be met by this tradition? What shapes does Buddhism take as it emerges into a rooted tradition in this new land? This course will end with a buffet lunch with Professor Gardiner.

David Gardiner specializes in Buddhism and the religions of China and Japan. He has taught at Colorado College since 1998. He has traveled widely in Asia, including over six years living and researching in Japan. He spent the 2000-01 academic year in Japan working on a book on writings of the 9th century Buddhist monk Kukai. His several articles and translations are related primarily to Kukai and the Shingon school of Tantric Buddhism founded in Japan.
