Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6, 2008 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day Cost: $150, includes materials Instructor: David Ashley Location: Packard Hall, 5 W. Cache La Poudre, Room 131 David Ashley will teach a weekend workshop on the most useful of modern calligraphic hands, the Italic. Developed in the chanceries of Renaissance Italy, this hand is both elegant, modern and adaptable. This workshop will cover basic letter forms, and introduce students to both historic and modern exemplars. There will be a brief slide lecture showing historic calligraphic slides. This workshop is for beginning to intermediate calligraphers. It will cover basic skills, use of pens, ink and gouache (for colors), and suitable papers. Both small letters and capitals will be covered. Also, basic practice skills, how to develop rhythm and regularity in writing, and a demonstration. David Ashley has been a calligrapher and bookbinder since 1974. He has been active in the Colorado Calligraphers’ Guild for the past thirty years, and has run his own studio since 1980. Ashley has taken innumerable calligraphy, binding and letterpress workshops, and is eager to share his skills with new students.
