| ADVANCING YOUR SERVICE LEARNING PRACTICE |
ED 518 7710 Two full days of week 7: July 22 - 23 .25 CC units (1 semester hour) This colloquium is for teachers to learn about service learning opportunities in the classroom, or, for those with a more experienced background in service learning, strengthen preparation, consider new ways to incorporate meaningful reflection, and build the skills students truly need for youth voice and choice. The aim of this course is to make service learning in the classroomsuccessful with both the learning and the service. Those who are new to service learning will gain knowledge from collegues who have been incorporating this effective method. Sessions will be highly interactive, and will cover an overview of service learning, preparation, what "youth voice" means, skill building, reflection of the work, service-learning connections, and making connections with colleagues and schools. Due to collaboration with the Colorado College Partnership for Civic Engagement, each participant will receive a copy of The Complete Guide to Service Learning and the companion CD Rom, and will receive breakfast and lunch both days. Students should bring laptops. Teachers should bring a book they have used with service learning with students, or a book you will be reading with students this year, as well as any service learning examples or ideas to discuss.
