Tell It Slant: Reading and Writing Creative Nonfiction Ira Glass says we are in the midst of the "golden age of nonfiction" (despite also being entrenched in the age of crap journalism). I share Glass's enthusiasm for the superb outpouring of creative truth-telling in our time, from the meteoric rise of book-length memoir to heroic feats of literary journalism. In this one-day seminar we will explore contemporary trends in nonfiction by a) reading and discussing at least one example in each of three sub-genres: memoir, personal essay, and narrative nonfiction (also called literary journalism); and b) completing writing exercises in each form. My hope is that each participant will walk away from the seminar with a new appreciation for creative nonfiction wiring and with several solid ideas of writing projects to pursue and creative ways to approach them. | |
