The college forbids hazing, which is defined as any action taken or situation created to produce mental, emotional, psychological, or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harrassment, intimidation, or ridicule, regardless of the individual's willingness to participate. Examples include paddling, creating excessive fatigue, physical land psycological shock, pulic stunts and buffoonery, and morally degrading or humiliating games and activities.
Grievances
You must immediately report any action or practice you believe to be hazing to the organization's officers or to a college official. Students filing complaints will not be penalized in any way as long as they have reported their concerns in good faith. Reprisal against any student filing a grievance will be considered a serious offense for both the individuals and organizations involved.
You can initiate a formal grievance procedure through the Dean of Students or the Student Conduct Committee.
Guidelines for Initiation
The college opposes hazing and other activities that do not contribute to the positive development and welfare of initiates and members. A true sense of community is nurtured in an atmosphere of social and moral responsibility and mutual respect.
Groups holding informal initiations must take care that they are not a public nuisance or distrubance and that no activities involve the possibility of physical injury or require initiates to violate their personal or moral convictions as a condition of initiation. The initiation cannot in any way interfere with a student's ability to properly discharge all academic obligations.
Responsibility
An organization's president, captain, or other elected or appointed executives or leaders are responsible for informing members of the hazing policy and enforcing it. This policy will be printed annually in the Pathfinder and distributed periodically to organization advisors, sponsors, and coaches.
