101–Elementary Italian. Basic grammatical structures and patterns, with oral drills, tapes, readings, and written exercises. 2 units – S. Bizzarro.

103, 104–Review of Elementary Italian. A lower-level maintenance course for students who plan to continue their study of Italian. Review of grammar with supervised oral practice. 1/4 unit – Department.

200–Pre-Intermediate Italian. This course is intended for students who want to study Italian at the second year level but need additional work on grammar and speaking. Prerequisite: Italian 101 or the equivalent. (January half-block.) 1/2 unit – Department.

201–Intermediate Italian. Review of fundamentals of Italian oral grammar and study of additional grammatical patterns. Written and oral composition. Prerequisite: 101 or consent of instructor. 2 units – S. Bizzarro.

203, 204–Oral Review of Intermediate Italian. A maintenance course for students who have taken Italian 201 and plan to continue their study of Italian. A systematic review of grammar with supervised conversation practice. 1/4 unit – Department.

209–Italian Theater Workshop. Participation in performance and production of a Italian-language play, presented in Italian. Rehearsal time 6–8 weeks. 1/4 unit – Department.

305–Oral Practice and Composition. Advanced composition and conversation practice through the study of Italian literary and cultural texts. Limited to 15 students. Prerequisite: 201 or equivalent. (Offered alternate years, not offered 1999–2000.) 1 unit – Department.

306–Introduction to Literary Analysis. Continues the acquisition of the Italian language and trains students in the most important methods of critical analysis through readings in different genres. Prerequisite: Italian 201 or equivalent. 1 unit – S. Bizzarro.

307–Readings in Italian Civilization. A cultural approach using both school texts and original works by important authors in the fields of politics, art, philosophy and history. Although coverage of all Italian civilization will not be attempted, most important aspects will be discussed. 1 unit – S. Bizzarro.

309–Independent Readings in Italian Literature. Textual analysis of important literary works, including at least six authors, two genres and three historical periods. Some authors to be studied are: Dante, Pulci, Leonardo, Goldoni, Manzone, Svevo, Gozzano, Pirandello and Calvino. 1 unit – S. Bizzarro.
