260–Chinese Politics in Literature. No literature in the world has as close a relationship to politics as does modern Chinese literature. In this course, we will read political and literary stories and essays from the May Fourth Era of the early twentieth century to the present era of economic reform and integration into the global community in order to examine how Chinese literature reflects political change and how politics influences Chinese writers and their works. 301–Comparative Politics: Western European Political Systems. A comparative study of the political systems and political cultures of selected European countries with consideration of their special problems and prospects. Prerequisite: 103 or 201 or consent of instructor. 1 unit – Schuttemeyer.

308–Comparative Politics: Russia. The roots, rise, maturity, and collapse of Soviet Leninism. Addresses implications of the Soviet legacy and contemporary conditions of the post-Soviet political order in Russia and other successor states of the Soviet Union. 1 unit – Belyaeva.

310–Comparative Politics: Eastern Europe. Compares aspects of the Soviet legacy and post-Soviet politics in former socialist states of Eastern Europe. Emphasis on Poland, the Czech Republic and former Yugoslavia. 1 unit – Finley.

Survey course on the development of modern politics in Japan, from the Meiji Restoration to the contemporary corporatist partnership between the state and the business and financial community. This survey course, covering Chinese history and politics from the Boxer Rebellion and the first Western influences to the successful revolution by the Chinese Communist Party, will provide a basic understanding of Chinese history and politics in the modern era. 331–Chinese Politics. The development of Chinese politics, with emphasis on the period of reform and opening to the world after 1976 and the contemporary politics of the People’s Republic of China. 335–Comparative Politics: Latin America I. A comparative overview of theories of political development, and the political culture, institutions, and processes of Latin America. 348–Women’s Movement in China. Traces the development of the women’s liberation movement in China, the growth of “Communist Party Feminism,” the transition of women from “beasts of burden to second-class citizens.” (Meets the Alternative Perspectives: B requirement). 1 unit – Fennell.
