The Facts About Alternative Admission Testing
While the hullabaloo over Legos and alternative admission testing has died down,
misinformation still prevails. The accompanying article, reprinted with permission from
the Minneapolis Star Tribune, addresses many of the questions we've fielded
recently. But the facts remain...
- CC is not eliminating the SAT as a credential in our selection process.
- The most important credential in our selection process remains the high school record.
- Other factors include such personal qualities and characteristics as perseverance,
problem-solving skills, the ability to work well in groups, the ability to contribute to
dialogue in a discussion setting.
- CC has far more qualified applicants than we can admit - this year, approximately 4,000
applicants for fewer than 600 openings.
- CC agreed to participate in the study because we're always interested in better
understanding how we can measure intangible qualities that contribute to a successful
college career.
- The project assumes that standardized tests miss important qualities and that students
who do poorly on tests may in fact be good college material. It does not use race as a
factor in selecting participants.
