Indexes Book Review Indexes
Indexes provide access to parts of larger items; to articles within journals
or chapters within books. Both On-line and CD-ROM indexes allow you to do a
faster and sometimes more exact search. You can also can also do a more sweeping
search covering many years where you might have to do one year at a time in
paper. Paper indexes, on the other hand, often are the only way to cover any
written articles prior to the 50's or 60's. Check the opening screens of any
CD-ROM or On-line index to see its coverage.
On-Line Indexes
There are many indexes available through the TIGER. The most valuable first
step would be to search Expanded Academic Index (choose "E" or "G"
at the main menu) or FirstSearch which offers access to over forty databases.
The reference librarian also has access to over 500 databases through DIALOG.
Talk to the reference librarian to find out which indexes might help you.

Paper Indexes
The reference collection at Tutt Library contains indexes that cover most
academic disciplines. The most widely known index to periodical articles is Readers'
Guide. Readers' Guide is not the appropriate index to use for locating scholarly
articles. Listed below are some excellent starting points in your search for articles
written in journals, not popular magazines.
- Alternative Press Index 1984- Quarterly
- Indexes over 200 journals and newspapers by subject of the article. Range
of subjects broad but all reflect a "left of center" slant.
- Historical Abstracts 1955 - Monthly

index. Some 5 year cumulative indexes.
- Humanities Index 1974-1991 Quarterly with annual cumulations
- Author and subject entries to articles in 300 English-language titles relating
to the humanities, i.e., art, history, philosophy, religion, etc. A separate
section of book reviews appears at the end of each issue.
- Left Index 1982- Quarterly
- Entries, primarily by author, index scholarly periodical literature written
from a left political perspective. Covers about forty periodicals. Each issue
also contains a book review index, and a subject index.
- PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service bulletin) 1915- Semimonthly
with annual cumulations
- Provides selective subject indexing to over 1,000 periodicals relating
to economic and social conditions. A very useful index for political science,
sociology, economics, and government. It also includes major books and government
publications. A CD-Rom (Compact Disc) version of PAIS is located beside the
reference desk. This computerized version of PAIS consolidates the years 1976
- present.
- Philosophers Index 1967- quarterly with annual cumulations
- Indexes philosophical books as well as periodicals. Abstracts are included.
Separate author and subject indexes.
- Religion Index One 1947- semiannual with biennial cumulation (title
varies 1949-1975, Index to Religious Periodical Literature)
- Indexes religious and archaeological periodicals from the United States,
England, France, Germany, Japan, and other countries. Each volume contains
a listing of book reviews. Uses a three part arrangement: 1) subject index;
2) author index with abstracts and 3) book review index.
- Social Sciences Index 1974- Quarterly with annual cumulations

relating to the social sciences. A separate section of book reviews appears
at the end of each issue.
Book Review Indexes
There are other indexes that cover specific subject areas and these may be
found in the index stacks (Art Index, General Science Index, Education Index,
etc.). Although many indexes include a book review section, Tutt Library has several
that index only book reviews.
- Book Review Digest 1905- Monthly with annual cumulation
- To qualify for inclusion a book must have been published or distributed
in the United States. Books are entered under author and each entry gives
a brief descriptive note, quotations from selected reviews with references
to the periodicals in which the reviews appeared, and references only to other
reviews. Indicates length of review.
- Book Review Index 1965- Bimonthly with annual cumulation
- Master cumulation covers 1969-79. Author and title index. Indexes reviews
in 450 periodicals.
- Index to Book Reviews in the Humanities 1960- Annual
- Several thousand books titles are included in each issue. Up until 1970
"humanities" included history but after that date the term is more
restricted.
