Online Indexes | CD-ROM Indexes | Paper Indexes Book Review Indexes

Indexes provide access to parts of larger items; to articles within journals or chapters within books. Both On-line and CD-ROM indexes allow you to do a faster and sometimes more exact search. You can also can also do a more sweeping search covering many years where you might have to do one year at a time in paper. Paper indexes, on the other hand, often are the only way to cover any written articles prior to the 50's or 60's. Check the opening screens of any CD-ROM or On-line index to see its coverage.

On-Line Indexes

There are many indexes available through the TIGER. The most valuable first step would be to search Expanded Academic Index (choose "E" or "G" at the main menu) or FirstSearch which offers access to over forty databases. The reference librarian also has access to over 500 databases through DIALOG. Talk to the reference librarian to find out which indexes might help you.

CD-ROM Indexes

Many indexes are available on CD-ROM and are accessed via computers in the reference index area. The following are some of the CD-ROM indexes at Tutt Library. (For further information please consult "CD-ROMs at Tutt Library" handout at reference desk).

Please note that MLA International Bibliography, Psych-Lit, Econ-Lit, and Sociofile are also available in traditional paper index format. The current year's volumes of these indexed are located in the Reference Index area. Previous year's volumes are stored in the Index Overflow are on Garden Level North. PAIS is available in traditional format as well and all volumes are stored in the Reference Index area. GPO Monthly Catalog in paper format is available in Government Documents, first floor South.

Paper Indexes

The reference collection at Tutt Library contains indexes that cover most academic disciplines. The most widely known index to periodical articles is Readers' Guide.
