Semester in Mexico

Academic Program
The department of Romance languages offers a unique opportunity for students to study at the Universidad Mesoamericana in Oaxaca, Mexico. The program begins with a half-block course, taught by CC professors, that is designed to be an orientation to Mexico and Oaxaca. Following the half-block, students enroll in one semester-long class at the Universidad Mesoamericana, selected from a range of options. Participants will receive assistance with course selection from program staff. In addition, students will take three CC courses adapted to the university calendar and taught by local faculty as well as CC professors.

Credit
Students will normally earn 4.5 units of Colorado College credit for the semester.

Program Location
Oaxaca is located approximately four hours south of Mexico City by car. It is considered one of the richest and most diverse states in Mexico, for its expressions of culture and history; its mix of pre-Hispanic treasures, major archaeological sites and colonial patrimony; as well as its music, dance, painting, traditions, and culinary arts. Oaxaca's scenery is marked by nine spectacular bays along its Pacific coast, caverns among the deepest in the world, hidden jungles, and luminous valleys. The beautiful landscape is home to sixteen indigenous groups who speak more than 150 different dialects, preserve their cultural legacy and way of life with pride and contribute to cultural plurality. UNESCO has declared the Historical Center in its capital city and the Monte Albán archaeological area--which house pre-Hispanic and colonial treasures unparalleled in Mesoamerica--World Heritage Sites.

Program Cost
Students will pay regular Colorado College tuition for the semester in Mexico. In addition, students will be responsible for paying additional program costs, including room and board, books, and transportation to and from Oaxaca. These costs were approximately $3,350 for the fall 2007 semester.

In most cases, students may apply their Colorado College financial aid to the cost of this program. In addition, special scholarships may be available to help defray the additional costs of study abroad. Download additional cost information.
