Questions to Ask

All students are encouraged to meet with a study abroad advisor least one year before they plan to study abroad. During your first meeting, you should be prepared to discuss the following:

  • Where would you like to study? Do you have a specific region, country or city in mind?
  • How long do you intend to study abroad? (A block, summer, semester, or year?)
  • Are you interested in learning a new language or improving your proficiency in an existing language? How would you assess your language skills?
  • Are there any requirements you will need to fulfill abroad (Major? Minor? Thesis?)
  • Why do you want to go abroad? (For the challenge of living and studying overseas? To take classes not available at CC? To get a new perspective on your major? Some other reason?)
  • What is your preferred learning style? (Do you learn best by seeing? Hearing? Experiencing?) Are you someone who does better with a lot of structure and guidance, or do you prefer a more independent learning environment?
  • What aspects of a study abroad program are most important to you? (Location? Availability of certain classes? Program length?)
