Applying for a Social Security Number: Procedures for J-1 Exchange Visitors

A Social Security number is a permanent nine-digit identification number issued by the United States government to be used primarily for obtaining retirement and medical benefit, and is required for persons employed while they are in the United States. Below you will find additional information about whether you need a Social Security number as well as instructions on how to apply.
