Comparative Literature Majors

Seniors

JAMIE COHEN is a senior, whose hometown is

New Haven, CT. She loved living in Aix-en-Provence last semester (of course, her other language is French!), and she loves to eat goat cheese, carmelized onions, and avocadoes! She has a strong interest in the Romance languages and loves

the open, intelligent, and engaging classroom discussions about literature. After graduation, she would like to return to France and teach English.

One of our seniors, ELAINE FRENETTE calls Lancaster, NH home, and her best life adventure so far has been canoeing for three weeks in Canada. She chose a Comparative Literature major because the flexible schedule allows for the pursuit of individual interests, including her study of Latin. For her senior thesis, she is translating Apuleius's Cupid and Psyche from Latin to English. After graduation, she plans to hike the Appalachian Trail. Her favorite book is The Little Prince

and she loves asparagus!

Another senior, JENNY FRIEDLER, hails from Glencoe, IL, and says her most interesting adventure was traveling to Barcelona. She loves to read books like On Beauty by Zadie Smith and Blindness by Jose Saramago. Comparative Literature is a perfect major for her, as it allows her to focus on modern literature and incorporate her love of film into her studies. Besides, she says, the program has "awesome topics courses and awesome professors." Her goal this year is to write a thesis she can be proud of, and after graduation, she hopes to get an internship at a magazine or newspaper, on the way to becoming a magazine editor herself!

JO KINGERY comes to us from Bend, OR, and is studying both French and Spanish, on her way to teaching in some capacity. She appreciates that the CompLit Program supports and encourages students to achieve whatever they desire within the academic realm of Comparative Literature. Her favorite book is Lolita by Nabokov and she loves chicken pot pie!

SAGE SANTMIER is one of our seniors who names her time abroad--6 weeks in Spain--as her best life adventure so far.  She comes from Winchester, VA, loves Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy and banana pancakes!  As a life-long, avid reader, Introduction to Comparative Literature was a natural choice for her FYE class and confirmed her choice of major.  She was especially drawn in by the depth of knowledge and availability of the professors, who are "always willing to help a student understand a certain passage or understand the best way to approach a paper."

Juniors

MARGAUX FRANK is a junior who hails from Longmeadow, MA and whose favorite book is Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. She is having a great adventure this semester studying in Japan and learning the language from scratch! She loves languages and writing and meeting people who get excited about the same things she does . . . aka other CompLit majors! As for food, she loves lentils and cornbread, ice cream and chocolate!

Another one of our juniors is

EMMA PARENTEAU, whose hometown is

St. Paul, MN. She has spent time in the Hoback Range of Wyoming and in Dakar, Senegal, both of which were great adventures. She loves that Comparative Literature is interdisciplinary: that it requires reading and analysis of literature and theory, and that there is a foreign language component.  She also loves her dad's French toast!

MARISSA RIVERA is currently studying in Dominican Republic, though she calls Devens, MA home. Her favorite book is Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut, and macaroni and

cheese is her favorite food. What she loves about Comparative Literature is that is combines her interests in language, literature, and culture. She also loves the focus on critical analysis of texts.
