Washburn Field
Opportunity in Athletics
Remember playing a soccer, lacrosse match, or football game, running around the track, or participating in an intramural Frisbee game? However, if it was at night, you may have been subject to a Frisbee in the face or a lacrosse ball that came out of nowhere.
For 107 years, Colorado College athletes have competed on Washburn Field, the oldest field west of the Mississippi. To preserve this historic resource and ensure athletic opportunities for today and tomorrow, the college recently unveiled a state-of-the-art artificial turf surface, and striped the field for three sports: football, lacrosse, and soccer. We are now at the crucial, last stage of the renovation process--installing new lighting. Washburn Field’s lights must be replaced to allow CC to play and host all collegiate level sports at night. The current lighting simply does not meet safety and liability standards.
Enhancing Washburn Field’s lighting will allow CC to play and host all collegiate level sports at night. Even more important, it addresses immediate safety concerns for our student athletes, which number
232 division I and III student athletes
122 club sport participants
727 intramural participants
= 1,108 student athletes
The goal for the project’s completion is this summer, so that everything will be ready to go when the students return in the fall.
The total cost of completing Washburn Field is $200,000.
We hope that you will invest in Washburn Field, and support Colorado College’s rich history and ongoing excellence.
